I doubt the animators are lazy.
Sawako's left all alone. How do you show that visually? Wide shot from above, slow zoom out.
Footprints other than Sawako's in the shot would negate that effect. Especially since once she starts walking forward, she would basically be following their prints, (regardless of the fact they change direction out of shot).
It was a choice they had to make and they're sure to lean towards dramatic effect over realism.
